Roses in Thyme

        Dear Loyal Customers and Friends,

We’ve made the difficult decision to no longer sell plants as a major
business focus. We’ve had modest expectations for our rose business. While
it’s exceeded them, it’s never provided enough extra revenue to hire help
with the greenhouse, grounds and gardens. The last years have found us
actively involved almost daily in the lives of grandsons 3 and 9 months.
We can only stretch our time and energy so far.The grandkids have thrived,
but the roses and gardens have suffered.

Times are tough for old roses. Our main supplier is drastically cutting
back the number of varieties they offer, in turn, limiting us. Vintage Gardens
is winding down its operation. Many other small nurseries have cut back the
varieties they offer, trying to focus on the best sellers, often newer varieties.
I feel we need to become an ark of sorts, to grow and protect the roses whose
numbers are few and commercial sources scarce. I’d like the time to work at
careful record keeping and labeling, to grow the scarcest roses in more than
one spot to ensure their survival. We’ll continue rose hunting, searching out
those lost treasures & seeing they live on. And we’ll keep our nursery license
and occasionally have roses for sale at the farm. We just won’t be growing
large numbers of grafted plants or selling at outside sales.

    For roses, we suggest

ROSES in THYME
SCULPS HILL HERBS

I know a bank where the wild thyme blows,
Where oxlips and the nodding violet grows,
    Quite over-canopied with luscious woodbine,
With sweet musk-roses and with eglantine...        A Midsummer Night's Dream
